Defending champion Quezon City outlasted former titlist Marikina in overtime, 73-71 to stay unscathed in the Metro League Boys 17-&-under basketball tournament Thursday afternoon at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

Alfonso Buot took charge in the endgame as the Junior Capitals posted a perfect 3-0 record in the North Division of M-League that is backed by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and with Barangay 143 as league presentor.

In other games, Bacoor City Agimat also pulled off an overtime win over Parañaque 100-86 to regain the solo lead in the South Division while Caloocan-Arceegee moved up to second in the North Division after nipping Navotas 71-63.

With Quezon City staring at a 63-67 deficit in extension play, Buot scored six straight points capped by a strong drive to the hoop for a 69-67 lead with 2:31 left.

Ethan Nepomuceno buried a layup to extend the Junior Capitals’ advantage before Hans Venedict Valdez drained insurance free throws to seal the hard-earned win.

Buot racked up a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists while Joaqui Riego De Dios drilled in 10 markers.

Jhomel Ancheta’s 26-point explosion went to waste as Marikina fell to 1-2 in this M-League tourney for 17-year olds and under basketball aspirants which has major sponsors in Synergy 88, World Balance, Excellent Noodles and San Miguel Corporation.

Meanwhile, the troika of Paulo Villarin, Mikhael James Gutierrez and Mark Angelo Torrijos powered Bacoor past Parañaque and back to the top of their group.

Villarin erupted for 26 points, Gutierrez chalked up 24 markers while Torrijos tallied 20 points and eight rebounds as Bacoor hiked its card to 3-1 in the South Division of M-League which also has SMS Global Technologies, Inc. as official livestream and technology partner, Spalding as official ball, Team Rebel Sports as official outfitter, PLDT as official internet service provider and Manila Bulletin as media partner.

Bacoor bounced back from a sorry 60-71 loss to Makati last Tuesday in Taguig.

Arwen Marcaida had 22 points and 11 rebounds while Ckel John Capulong and Hanz Querido had 16 markers apiece for Parañaque, which remained winless in three outings.

In the third game, John Sherick Estrada fueled Caloocan’s victory at the expense of the hapless Navotas in the North Division of M-League that is also supported by Gerry’s Grill, Summit Water, Alcoplus, Nature’s Spring and Goodfellow.

Estrada fired 23 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting from the field on top of five rebounds and three assists.

Rommel Mangalindan had 14 points even as Klein Alcky Lizan had 12 markers for Navotas, which dropped to 0-3.   (JBU)
